Once upon a time, there was a beauty queen, Emi (Paulina Galazka), who
didn't really know what to do with her beauty - until she met fellow
beauty queen Marianka (Katarzyna Sawczuk) and her ambitious mother Dorota
(Katarzyna Figura), who were more than eager to take her under her wing -
and turn her into a high class prostitute. Now for many girls this would
have been the beginning of a downward spiral, but Emi's smart, and before
long, she figures out the workings of Dorota's organisation, rises in the
ranks and ultimately becomes Dorota's business partner. And the clients
take to Emi more than to Dorota as she's the one who's also willing to put
out should need be. And when they meet with Sam (Giulio Berruti), a pimp
with primarily Arabian clientele, he definitely chooses Emi over Dorota,
which also includes an affair between the two of them. Feeling left out of
the lucrative deal, Dorota tries to take some shots against Emi, something
that totally backfires with Emi cutting all ties with her, handling
business on her own - and so successfully so that she soon doesn't have to
put out herself anymore. Things are going so great though that they just
have to come crashing down, when at the same day Emi's almost raped by an
Arabian prince (Andrea Preti) and one of her girls (Olga Kalicka) commits
suicide because she couldn't handle the pressure anymore. But Emi finds a
way out with Bartek (Józef Parlowski), son of a rich family who unaware
of her past loves her who she is - and so Emi abandons her business,
marries Bartek, they have a daughter, and - of course her past comes
haunting her eventualy ... A rather powerful drama that works
quite so well because it does not paint a black-and-white picture, because
it doesn't judge and try to drive home some wholesome message. Instead it
tells its story to basically do just that, tell a powerful and engaging
story. Likewise the direction never goes to extremes: Sure, some scenes
are glitzy to gaudy but never more so than they need to be for narrative
purposes, while all the nudity and sex (and there's less than you'd expect
given the movie's subject matter) always support the story. And what
probably really makes the movie, not only do all the actors look their
parts, the acting's also on point throughout to make this one pretty
engaging and also very watchable drama.
