After having lost the love of his life, Sarah (Danielle Keaton), in a
car accident, Sam (Paris Peterson) takes some days off work to go to the
family lodge in the country to get over his grief - and at first this
seems to be working rather ok, actually, and he even finds a friend among
the locals (Jacob Nichols). Sure, at one point he badly injures his hand,
but hey, shit happens. Thing is, then that friend dies mysteriously, The
memories of Sarah become more and more vivid until she actually appears to
him, and more and more he has to notice he's pursued by something that's
totally malevolent and that feeds on his grief ...
Sure enough, this is a rather unusual piece of horror, it's
intentionally slow-moving, often only hints at or alludes to plot points,
is somewhat lyrical in approach and prefers atmosphere over simple scare
tactics - in other words, it's not necessarily a film for your
middle-of-the-road genre fan but might attract the arthouse crowd, and
it's true you need a little bit of patience to sit through the film. That
said, if you're not frightened off by the above, you'll find yourself
watching a quite fascinating horror movie, one that doesn't follow any
dried out formulas to provide cheap scares, but that has a certain
maturity to it and paints a rounded out picture. So as mentioned before,
not a movie for everybody, but those with a bit of patience will be richly
rewarded.
