Tanzania: Somehow Ben (Rudolf Zehetgruber) gets his hands on a VW Bug
called Dudu that seems to have a life of its own, and since he wants to
help his friend, jungle doctor Daktari Jo (Kathrin Orginski), he decides
to participate in the East Africa rally, but being unable to afford the
entry cost, he is only able to join as service car for Scotsman Butler
(Gerd Duwner), who plans to win the rally by hoovercraft by going from
checkpoint to checkpoint in a straight line rather than following the
streets, something Ben feels Dudu, an amphibian actually, can easily
match. The only real competition in the race is actually last year's champ
Nick, but due to his good heart, he is repeatedly sidetracked.
Lots of jungle slapstick follows, and somehow, Ben and Butler overcome
some diamond thieves along the way and repeatedly have to fight an evil
saboteur, but ultimately they ally themselves with Nick, their fiercest
competition, and agree whoever wins will give the money to Daktari Jo's
jungle hospital ... and ultimately (and rather by accident), Dudu the
service car wins the race - and everybody is happy.
A very obvious attempt to cash in on Walt Disney Productions' The
Love Bug-series (not only in title), The Love Bug Rally is
actually a trashy German adventure comedy, with lots of bad gags, plenty
of jungle and rally stock footage not always matching the actual scene,
and an inconsequent and not really thought through screenplay. To come
straight to the point, The Love Bug Rally is a pretty bad film,
however comedy masochists, nostalgia freaks and trash enthusiasts (and I
consider myself all three) will like the film nevertheless and against
their own better knowledge.
