Somewhere in Africa: Joan's (Virginia Hewitt) father has gone to the
jungle to finally find a rich uranium mine that has been the stuff of
legends for years - but he has gone missing during his search, which has
prompted Joan to turn to the Commissioner (James Craven) for help. He's
got other worries on his hands though, like a native sect killing the
locals dressed up as lions, and for the life of it, he can't figure out
how to locate that sect. Fortunately he has a good friend who can help
with all of this, Kimbar (Steve Reeves), jungle man and friend of all
animals. And of course, when asked, Kimbar is quick to ffer his
assistance, especially once he sees and takes a liking to Joan, whom he
saves from a vicious animal attack. Unfortunately though, as soon as
Kimbar sets out to investigate, he's captured by the lion men, and ... ...
and that's the end of it, really. Kimbar of the Jungle was a pilot
for a TV series that never got picked up, and in a way, it's easy to see
why: The thing is just a very blatant Tarzan-clone
with very little in its favour to stick out of the crowd of jungle
entertainment, and while Steve Reeves might physically fill the role, he
doesn't really show charisma to properly carry the thing - and you might
have to remember here, this was made a year before he first became Mr.
Universe and 9 years before he found fame in Italy with Hercules.
That said, within its limitations dictated by genre and formula, Kimbar
of the Jungle isn't at all bad, its stock footage is integrated with
the main plot rather well, Steve Reeves is actually shown to handle wild
beasts, and the set-up of the story at least promises adventures. But
while it sounds interesting to figure where the series might have headed,
it might have very well disappointed due to its formulaic approach and
lack of originality.
