Who thinks competitive jousting went out with the Middle Ages ought to
think again, as while it's certainly a fringe sport, there are still
actual jousters in actual (though slightly adapted) medieval-like armour
out there battling it out - in show fights at renaissance fairs of course,
to support the sport and provide authentic entertainment to the masses,
but also in actual tournaments. David W. Schade runs one such jousting
company, The New Riders of the Golden Age, out of Sarasota,
Florida, which is touring the country with the Sherwood Forest Faire,
and he takes us behind the scenes showing what's the same and what has
changed since midieval times, and also showing the comraderie between the
jousters and the therapeutic effects of the jousting lifestyle ... Now
the subject matter in itself already makes Knight Life a
fascinating documentary, but what makes it really infectuous is the
enthusiasm that Schade, who has also written and produced, has put into
his project, an enthusiasm clearly shared by the rest of his crew. Also,
the film features many quite cool jousting clips, shot from pretty much
all angles (including GoPro shots of course) that really transmit the
fascination of the sport as such. And all this combined basically makes
for a very entertaining watch.
