It's the summer in an American small town, and best friends, youngsters
Robbie (Coleman Christian), Eric (Corban Jazz), tomboy Grace (Ashtine
Besteda) and nerdy Brewster (Max Gerstenberg), want to spend it like every
other summer, hanging out at the local pond, going for swims ever so
often. However, when Brewster's sister Diana's (Alexa Feldman) foot gets
stuck somewhere in the pond and she almost drowns, Brewster's dad (Brian
Stever) forbids them all to go even near the pond - a rather harsh
reaction to what has been essentially a silly accident. Thing is,
Brewster's dad works at the local paper mill, and he knows (and is worried
about) that the company dumps some of its waste into the pond - even
though according to his boss Kerri (Brittany Goodwin) it's within
acceptable margins. However, after her accident, Diana gets really sick
for a day or two, so our young heroes decide to investigate - even if that
means breaking into Kerri's office one night to find some incriminating
evidence. And evidence they find - but who's going to believe them at
their tender age?
As far as movies with kid heroes go, this is most certainly
one of the better ones - for one because it doesn't talk down to its young
target audience and instead revolves around a rather serious enviromental
issue. However, in approach the film is light-footed, putting
entertainment over delivering its message. And in directorial this film
sure is a throwback to the 1980s, being somewhat reminiscent of the best
kiddie adventures of that era - so much so that Little Heroes looks
and feels like it's set back when, even though that's never explicitely
mentioned. And very relatable young leads giving solid performances and
carrying the film most certainly also doesn't hurt, making this a rather
enjoyable ride.
