For the longest time, their dad (Michael Thyer) has abused them, both
physically and mentally, so it was really only a matter of time before
Henry (Carter O'Donnell and Jacob (Brady O'Donnell) struck back in a
violent way, then left their home in the middle of nowhere in search of
their estranged mother (Trina Campbell) - but the woods hold many a
danger, and them being young boys still, Henry and Jacob haven't come as
prepared as they've thought. But they persevere and find their mum - only
mum isn't particularly pleased to see them, and there are things the boys
find out about her they would rather not have ...
The Long Dark Trail certainly isn't a film that spends
much time explaining anything away, with the result that large portions of
the film are left open to interpretation throughout - and this becomes the
film just fine as it works more like along the lines of a dark fairy tale
or a nightmare than your usual genre movie, and thus has a certain air of
magic that sometimes borders surrealism to itself, with the wonderful and
wonderfully atmospheric pinewoods backdrops only contributing to this,
making this one cool and unusual genre experience.
