Two young girls, Michèle and Marie, imagine to be young adults on the
beach - but why stop there, why not go on imagining, why not imagine
they're in New York City? Though neither of them have actually been in New
York City, so the little they know is augmented by things they have
learned from comicbooks, pulp novels and genre movies, and even there they
are inconsistent, as sometimes New York is substituted for Rome. In the
fantasy (or dream?) they share, they get separated in town and play pretty
much a city-wide game of hide-and-seek, but they also share many
adventures, like a run-in with the White Vampire. Time has passed,
and now the girls have grown into old women. They've long lost touch and
need a sorceress to reunite them again. And once that's achieved, they can
imagine to be the young girls again ... Ok, so the story of the
movie doesn't make a lot of sense, and director Jean Rollin does return to
many of the motives from earlier movies (though goes very easy on nudity
and overt eroticism here) - but that said, it's also a beautiful piece of
cinematic poetry, not really made to make sense but to suck one into
Rollin's universe that always combines the pulpy and the lyrical, as the
director has long developed his own cinematic language that often defies
logic to achieve otherworldy effect - with the result being a fascinating
and almost triplike film.
