Bad guys/demons killed a farmer's wife, a young kid's mother, and the
kid grew up full of hatred for his mother's killers and trained hard in
martial arts to become a samurai, and maybe the bravest, strongest and
most able of them all, stamping out evil wherever he finds it, killing
many a demon and bad guy. And yet, for all the effort he has done to
restore peace and let justice rule, there's one who is even more prominent
than him when it comes to bringing peace, and that's a humble old monk who
has never killed a soul, good or bad, in his life. Naturally the samurai
wants to meet the monk - but he's not prepared for the monk being his own
father ... Martial artist Troy Sandford, writer, director and
producer of this film, has made a name of himself primarily as an actor in
martial arts movies, stunt man and coordinator, and leader of his own
stunt team, Troy's
Team - so it should come as little surprise that this short is a
martial arts movie. That said however, if you go into this expecting it to
be just a showcase for the action work of him and his team, you're in for
a pleasant surprise, because while it's hardly surprising that this film
is set in the martial arts world (and loosely based on an old Japanese
legend), it's done in a way where atmosphere trumps over spectacle, and
thus the films highly stylized, elegiac tone makes this more into a
martial arts poem (also supported by the narration spoken in rhyme) than a
mere action flick. And the carefully crafted images that transmit a
dreamlike mood make this one quite an unique experience that really isn't
to be missed.
