Kah-to-Bey was tricked out of being a pharao & had to flee with his
slave/guardian Prem to the desert, where he (of course) died. In 1920 an
expedition financed by rich but arrogant businessman John Philips but
lead by archeologist & Hammer-regular Andre Morell sets out to find
him/his mummy. Not heeding the warnings of crazy Egyptian Roger Delgado,
they unearth the mummy & reunite it with the mummy of guardian Prem
in the Cairo museum. Of course once they are reunited, Delgado finds a
way of ressurecting Prem's mummy & he goes on a rampage killing both
Morell & Philips along with Tim Barrett & yet another
Hammer-regular, Michael Ripper as Philips' loyal but somewhat helpless
assistant, before it can be immobilized by reading out some ancient
Egypt incantation to immobilize mummies (the usual stuff).
This is actually a movie from past Hammer's prime years & it
somewhat shows as the plot seems exatly as it is - repeated for the
umpteenth time. What actually makes this movie work is its characters
that are more sketched out than usual, also helped by some great
performances of Philips, Morell, Ripper & especially Delgado, who
actually hasn't got all that much to say (& even most of that is in
Arab), but, as always, hams up his villain-role with a relish that
borders pure camp & makes him such a joy to watch. Delgado would
later be the first Master on TV's Doctor Who from 1971 to his
untimely death in '73, giving equally great performances. |
