Roger (César Burner) invites Virginia's (Elena Arpón) friend Betty
(Lone Fleming) to go with them on a trip to the countryside - much to
Virginia's dismay, as Betty & Roger are not only instantly attracted
to each other, but Betty was also Virginia's former lesbian lover. As,
on the train to their holiday destination, the tension between the 3 of
them is mounting, Virginia decides to jump off the train in the middle
of nowhere, trying her luck on foot. She soon finds the ruins of Berzano
& decides to stay there for the night - which is not such a good
idea since that night the Templars - devil worshipping knights who have
been executed by the inquisition & their eyes plucked out by crows -
rise from their graves, & they are more than a little cranky, soon
biting Virginia to death (for they do need blood to survive). The next
day, Roger & Betty decide to look for Virginia in the ruins of
Berzano, but instead they find the police there who informs them about
their friend's death. & while they speak of simple murder, Roger
& Betty do a little investigating of their own & soon stumble
over the legend of the Templars, but also over a rumour of smugglers
living in that region who just want to keep unwelcomed visitors away
& thus scare them off by every now & again killing someone. So
Roger & Betty decide to go to the lion's den - the smugglers'
hideout that is - & confront the smugglers' leader Pedro (Joseph
Thelman) with the rumours of them killin people - rumours he not only
dismisses, but he also agrees to accompany them to Berzano, along with
his jealous girlfriend Maria (María Silva). Once there though, Pedro
takes the first opportunity to sneak away with Betty & rape her, but
he doesn't live long enough to tell the tale, as the Templars kill him
immediately afterwards, as well as Roger, who rushes in to help him.
Maria, who can't help but screaming, also meets her end at the sharp end
of a sword, only Betty manages to stay quiet enough to sneak away from
the Templars - they are blind you see, so solely dependent of their ears
- & jump onto a train passing by. But the Templars have already
entered the train on their own & slaughtered all the passengers ...
Without a doubt one of the milestones of European horror-cinema, La
Noche del Terror Ciego manages to be scary as shit due to a very
straight forward plot, very basic special effects (the horror created
mainly by skeletons in cloaks, irritating noises on the soundtrack &
- most effective of all - simple slow motion), & a
straight-to-the-point, even crude direction & camerawork. Over the
years, the film spawned 3 direct sequels as well as many rip-offs (the
most prominent probably being John Carpenter's The Fog), but none
matched the creepy quality of this movie.
