So he's the last human alive, but still Lister (Craig Charles) is
outranked by the after death hologram Rimmer (Chris Barrie), if ever so
slightly, & Rimmer is pretty much an arsehole to whom military ranks
mean everything & he wouldn't dream of doing any favour to something
below him (if ever so slightly), even if that would just mean telling
Lister where to find the cigarettes ... or giving up his afterlife
holographic appearence for just one evening so Lister can date the
afterlife hologram image of his secret love from way back, Kachanski
(C.P.Grogan).
So Lister decides to take the chef exam ... not that that would mean
much or even interest him, but that way he would at least outrank Rimmer,
a simple technician. Rimmer tries everything to keep him from it, even
takes on the appearance of Kachanski for a while to keep Rimmer from
passing the exam, but to no avail, in the end, Lister is his superior
& Rimmer has to call him Sir (thought he narration at the
beginning of the next episode, Waiting for God, tells us Lister has
failed the exam).
As ever so often with Red Dwarf, especially in the first
series, there are not too many laughs, but watching Rimmer & Lister
constatnly bickering is just hilarious.
