A mailpod reaches the spaceship after 3 million years ("normal for
second class mail"), & in it a letter from Rimmer's mum that his
dad (John Albineri) has died, a letter from the outland rerenue that he
owes 18.000 Pounds in taxes, & a videogame called Better than Life,
that allows its players to really enter the game via ciberspace. &
even though Rimmer & his father never got along & rimmer of course
knew he was dead (after all he is an after life hologram & has himself
died 3 million years ago, the letter deeply depresses him - so he decides
to get into the game with Lister (Craig Charles) & Cat (Danny
John-Jules), after all, here everything is better than life. But while the
others soon have their (rather simple) wishes fulfilled - Cat is dating
Marilyn Monroe (Debbie Ash), & for Lister there's nothing greater than
caviar Vindaloo anyways - Rimmer's career as an admiral is spoilt when his
father tells him how disappointed he is & his love affair with his
secret (real life) love McGruder (Judy Hawkins) becomes a living hell when
they all of a sudden have 7 children & mortgage to pay ... It seems,
that Rimmer has an automatic inhibitor that won't allow anything good
happen to him, & soon enugh he drags the others with him into his
misery.
& then the taxman (Ron Pember) comes after him, too ...
Partly this is an interesting & even funny character study of
Rimmer, but partly the episode is just a succession of jokes - & not
even good ones - about what can happen in cyberspace. In all thought he
positive aspects outweigh the negative ones, if only just.
