One year ago, Sarah (Sasha Anne) has been only one of two survivors of
a bus accident, and she has been suffering from survivor's guilt ever
since, especially since the accident killed her uncle (Clint Carmichael)
and her cousin and best friend Kelsey (Madison Ekstrand) - supposedly
killed at least in Kelsey's case, as her body has never been found and
Sarah could swear she has seen "something" drag her into the
woods. And now, with Sarah working at her college newspaper, the chance
for her has come to get over her guilt and find Kelsey at the same time -
by proposing to write an article about the Jersey Devil for the
college newspaper ... as the Jersey Devil is supposed to roam the area
where the accident happened back when. So she and the other survivor,
Kelsey's boyfriend Alex (Evan Adams) get themselves a guide, Hank (Anthony
Jensen), to take them to the scene of the accident. Things get out of
hands pretty soon though when Alex falls down a ravine and is injured,
Hank and Sarah go look for help in different directions. And while Hank's
intentions soon enough prove to be on the malicious side, and he and
another local (Catherine Healy) soon take Alex captive, Sarah happens upon
the forest home of mild-mannered Eric (Joseph Almani), who goes out of his
way to help her, and scores extra points with her for believing in the
Jersey Devil. So everything might turn out fine - but then Sarah finds
Kelsey locked up in Eric's basement ... Joe Estevez can be seen as the
town crazy - who's of course proven right in the end.
A nice horror movie that despite its monster theme doesn't
strictly rely on the tried-and-true slasher formula but adds a proper
backstory and thus plenty of mystery to the mix, this way giving its main
characters proper and relatable motivation. And of course, an interesting
cast of characters - embodied by a very able ensemble - also help to
elevate this movie over by-the-numbers genre entertainment, as does a
directorial effort that that until the finale chooses tension and mystery
over pure spectacle, to make this a pretty enjoyable piece of horror.
