Beth's (Vivian Kerr) life hat turned into a bit of a mess of late -
well, a lot of a mess, as she has lost her high end job, has lost her
house, and is reduced to sleeping in her car these days. At least she has
managed to find abode for her daughter Birdy (Julianna Layne) with her
brother Ben (Anthony Rapp) and his wife Stacy (Laura Parrilla), but that's
a problem there, too: She doesn't dare to tell her brother she's been laid
off and is homeless, so she comes up with excuse after excuse of why she
can't pick Birdy up - until she can't bear being separated from her
daughter anymore, and she finds a pretense to move in with Ben and Stacy.
Thing is, Ben and Stacy aren't exactly without their own issues, for one
they want to get pregnant but Stacy quite apparently is infertile, and all
the treatments they try don't work. So the last thing they need is to have
Beth and the chaos that comes with her under their roof ...
This film could have gone two ways, either play it for laughs
and turn its story into a series of punchlines, or pushing the drama
factor to eleven and go the tearjerker route. Fortunately, Scrap has
chosen neither of these approaches, instead goes for a slice-of-lifestyle
of storytelling, where the comical and the tragic can co-exist, and both
are somewhat downplayed in order to make the film seem more real. And add
to that a down-to-earth cast playing well fleshed out, grounded
characters, all carried by a suitably light-footed directorial effort, and
you've got yourself a fine piece of cinema that's quite so touching
because it never tries to be.
