Sean (Jim Sea) and Abby (Kristine Isom) have been together for most of
their lives, and are still very much in love - when Sean returns from the
hospital with the news that he has only 6 more months to live. The two
decide instead of giving in to grief, they ought to make the most of the
time they still have together travelling to all the places they've always
wanted to see, and part with a promise to find one another in the next
life. Now their last 6 months together are probably the most beautiful in
their lives, but eventually Sean leaves the plane of the living, with Abby
soon to follow - but how to find one another again in the next life? Now
this could have been pure kitsch, but thanks to a subtle script and
directorial effort this has actually become a very touching film,
especially since it doesn't overplay its emotional core but underplays
things to let the audience fill in the blanks - and as a result making the
love story much more palpable, makes it feel much more real. And that
subtlety is also mirrored in the cast's performances, that remain very
relatable because of that. And the result is a film that's heartwarming
even to an old cynic like myself.
