This time around, the Iron Cross Army steal the bones of a cat demon
from its grave to turn it into a new Machine Bem (~ robot). Spider-Man
(Shinji Todou) is on the spot from square 1 though because in his everyday
iodentity as bike-racer Takuya, he has taken his reporter girlfriend
Hitomi (Rika Miura) to an old lady who claims she can speak with cats for
an interview. And this old lady just happens to be the guardian of the cat
demon's tomb. So as Spider-Man, Takuya manages to save a girl from being
killed by the cat demon Machine Bem, while the old lady starts an
incantation to put the cat demon back to sleep ... but is only killed by
the Iron Cross Army for her efforts before she can finish the incantation.
On top of that, Takuya is injured while fighting the Machine Bem, and the
poison from its cat claws almost kills him. Only the spider blood in his
veins ultimately keeps him alive. Once back to full strength, Spider-Man
returns to the old lady's place and finishes her incantation - which
totally drives the Machine Bem bonkers, to a point where he grows to
gigantic size and threatens to smash everything - but luckily, Spider-Man
has his giant robot Marveller/Leopardon which he pilots to fight, defeat
and destroy the cat demon Machine Bem. This episode of Spider-Man,
a rare excursion into the horror genre, has its atmospheric moments ...
but of course the atmosphere is quickly destroyed once one gets a good
look at the cat demon Machine Bem, once Spider-Man leaps into action, and
once the Machine Bem fights Spidey's robot. Of course though, these are
exactly the moments of camp that make the series as a whole so funny ...
