J.J. (Ethan Hawke) is a secret service agent stationed in Rome, and
even though the city is basically depleted of people due to the pandemic,
that's no reason for the undeclared war between the agencies not going on
as strong as ever, a war where J.J. has no idea whether he's on the right
side or if his employers won't drop him at any point for their
convenience. And J.J.'s weapon of choice is the camera, as whoever
controls the images controls the "truth". Thus when he blows up
the Vatican, it's above all important that he delivers the right pictures.
But the camera can just as easily be used against him, as eventually some
Russian operatives catch him and force him to have sex on camera with one
of their own - and suddenly he's in the crosshairs of those he has worked
for ... Now above is only an approximation to what Zeros and
Ones might actually be about, as the film very intentionally eplains
very little, leaves plenty of room for interpretation, and plays with
genre conventions in a very cerebral way, and through its very maze-like
plot the film actually gets to the heart of its subject matter. And Abel
Ferrara's very raw directorial approach really fits the story well, making
this a film that surely isn't for everyone, but a fascinating one if
you're willing to go on a mind trip.
